UA&P prof, MSIE grads enter into int’l publishing with book on bank competition

University of Asia and the Pacific professor Dr. Jovi C. Dacanay, along with her research associates Ella Mae O. Leonida and Michaela Nicole Meriño, both alumni of the Master of Science in Industrial Economics (MSIE) Program of the UA&P School of Economics (SEC), has achieved a significant milestone in international publishing.

Their book, Bank Competition and the Effects on Financial Stability: Insights into the Emerging Banking Markets of the Philippines, was recently published by Palgrave Macmillan as part of its Studies in Banking and Financial Institutions series. This carefully peer-reviewed work stands out as one of the few locally authored books to gain recognition in the global academic community.

The book delves deeply into the stability and industrial organization of Philippine Universal and Commercial Banks, shedding light on their role in maintaining financial stability amidst economic shocks, particularly within the context of a developing economy. It argues that banks with sufficient market power, efficiency, and stability are better equipped to endure economic disruptions.

This publication is the culmination of five years of extensive research into the complexities of the Philippine banking sector by Dr. Dacanay, director of the PhD in Business Economics Program of SEC; Leonida, a senior analyst at RingCentral Inc., a US-based provider of AI-driven cloud business communications; and Meriño, an investment officer of First Metro Asset Management, Inc. and a certified Treasury Professional.

A part of Springer Nature, the British company Palgrave Macmillan is a world-class publisher of books and journals with more than 175 years of experience in the Humanities and Social Sciences. Its Higher Education textbook division, Macmillan International Higher Education, carries a selection of STEM textbooks and distributes several US imprints outside North America.

The book series Studies in Banking and Financial Institutions is indexed under Research Papers in Economics (RePEc). RePEc is a central index of economics research, including working papers, articles, and software code.
