University Day Lecture

The Free Rider Problem in APEC’s Trade in Environmental Goods Initiative
Dr. George Manzano
August 2024

This year’s University Day Lecture was delivered by UA&P Associate Professor Dr. George Manzano, who spoke on “The Free Rider Problem in APEC’s Trade in Environmental Goods Initiative.” Dr. Manzano highlighted the transborder nature of environmental issues.

“Pollution, global warming, and climate disturbances cross national borders. Therefore, solutions must also be transborder — either global or regional,” the former dean of the School of Economics said. “A single country cannot tackle these issues alone; addressing climate change and other environmental concerns requires international cooperation.”

Leaving a Legacy: Lessons from History about Endowments
Dr. Juan Mesquida
August 2023

In Leaving a Legacy: Lessons from History about Endowments, Mesquida gives a brief history of the confraternity from its establishment in 1594 until it was abolished in 1896. “A few years after the foundation, some donors of the Misericordia preferred to create endowments to finance their favored charities.” Respondentia legacies were created in Manila during the 18th century. Prominent citizens, male and female, entrusted their money to the Misericordia and similar welfare societies to raise funds with which they could sponsor many beneficiaries. He describes how Misericordia built its own small church for devotional practices and how Universities, which are also corporations but not for profit, “provide higher education and produce research that will benefit society. Therefore, they are philanthropic societies.” He ends by revealing that the University of Asia and the Pacific has been and still is a much-loved beneficiary of philanthropy since its inception as the Center for Research and Communication in 1967. “Our own campus was a generous donation of the Ortigas family.”

The Awards for Publication of Scholarly Work

The Awards for Publication of Scholarly Work are intended to recognize and thereby encourage excellent research and creative work of UA&P employees (faculty members, academic non-teaching staff, and administrative staff). Publications that pursue the  University research agenda take precedence. As the University grows in numbers and resources,  it hopes to be able to give due recognition to an increasing number of employees and their scholarly work.
